How to Remove Odors from Your Kitchen Sink
Why Kitchen Sinks Smell
Bad smells from the kitchen sink are caused by food particles decomposing in the drain, bacterial growth in the garbage disposal, or biofilm buildup on the drain walls. A quality drain system with anti-odor design prevents most odors, but here are solutions for when smells do occur.
Quick Fix: Ice and Citrus
If you have a garbage disposal, drop a handful of ice cubes and half a lemon into it. Run the disposal for 30 seconds. The ice scrapes buildup off the blades while the lemon deodorizes naturally.
Deep Fix: Baking Soda and Vinegar
Pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by half a cup of white vinegar. Cover the drain with a drain cover and let the fizzing action work for 15 minutes. Flush with boiling water.
Prevention
- Use a strainer basket to catch food particles before they enter the drain
- Run hot water for 30 seconds after each sink use
- Clean the drain strainer daily
- Never pour grease down the drain
Persistent Odors
If odors persist after cleaning, the P-trap may need attention. Place a bucket under the curved pipe, unscrew it, and clean out any accumulated debris. Reassemble tightly and test for leaks.
