What Is SS304 Stainless Steel? A Kitchen Material Guide

Understanding Stainless Steel Grades

Not all stainless steel is created equal. The "304" in SS304 refers to a specific grade of austenitic stainless steel that contains 18% chromium and 8% nickel. This particular composition makes it the most widely used stainless steel in the food industry, and for good reason.

Why SS304 Is the Gold Standard for Kitchen Products

Corrosion resistance: The chromium content creates an invisible oxide layer on the surface that protects against rust, tarnish, and corrosion — even when exposed to water, acidic foods, and salt daily.

Food safety: SS304 is completely non-porous and non-reactive. It does not leach chemicals into food, absorb odors, or stain from spices and sauces. This is why hospitals, commercial kitchens, and food processing plants use SS304 exclusively.

Durability: It withstands extreme temperatures, repeated dishwasher cycles, and heavy daily use without degrading. A quality SS304 product can last decades.

SS304 vs Other Grades

  • SS304 vs SS201: SS201 contains less nickel and more manganese, making it cheaper but significantly less corrosion-resistant. Avoid SS201 for food contact.
  • SS304 vs SS316: SS316 adds molybdenum for even better corrosion resistance, but the improvement is marginal for kitchen use and not worth the price premium.
  • SS304 vs SS430: SS430 is magnetic and less corrosion-resistant. It is used in cheap appliances but unsuitable for cutting boards.

Velgrina SS304 Products

All Velgrina Stainless Steel Cutting Boards use genuine food-grade SS304 steel. The Drain Cover and 3-in-1 Sink Drain also use SS304 for long-lasting corrosion resistance. When you see "SS304" on a Velgrina product, you know it meets the highest food-safety standards.
